Week 9 - Laptop Upgradability
Oftentimes when it comes to using laptops, a lot of people may think that there is no room for upgrading the components within a laptop. While this can certainly hold true for some models, there are other models that allow you to make changes to increase the performance of your laptop. Considering laptops are made to be used for portability and simplicity, some people who have never worked with laptops may find it a bit daunting to worry about opening up a laptop. So, what are the potential upgrades for laptops?
Well, the two most common and practical upgrades for laptops are upgrading to an SSD / better storage drive or upgrading the RAM. What are the benefits of upgrading RAM? Without writing a large segment on it, upgrading RAM can lead to better multitasking and the use of multiple programs, more fluidity while performing various tasks (gaming and web browsing), and better data transfer rates. So if you are looking for a nice boost in performance with general computing, upgrading the RAM will provide a good boost in performance. As for upgrading a drive, choosing the correct drive will lead to much better system startup and program load times. Laptops can become slow over time as storage gets closer to reaching its full capacity. Upgrading the storage will allow for programs to be placed on that new drive, with higher and faster speeds. Because of the speed increase of programs and system startup, multitasking will feel much easier after upgrading the SSD and the RAM.
The bottom line is that upgrading the RAM and storage could reap great performance benefits if you do the research and select the right model. It will make the user experience of the laptop much better. The best part is, upgrading these components on a laptop should not be that difficult at all. It is important to look up information on the particular laptop model that is being used to make sure that these upgrades are possible and to find components that would be compatible with the upgrade. Using the manual and finding internet resources (such as videos) will make this process even easier.
